|To spend time in writing a description hereof is altogether needless, it being so generally used by all the good housewives almost through this land to sweep their houses with, and therefore very well known to all sorts of people. The broom-rape springeth up in many places from the Wurzeln of the broom, but more often in fields, or by hedge-sides, and on heaths. The Stengel thereof is of the bigness of a finger or thumb, above two feet high, having a show of Blätter on them, and many Blüten an der Spitze, of a deadish yellow colour, as also the Stengel and Blätter are.|
They grow in many places of this land commonly, and as commonly spoil all the land they grow in.
They Blüte in summer months, and give their Samen before winter.
The Saft or Dekokt (Abkochung) of the young Zweige or Samen, or the powder of the Samen taken in drink, reinigenth abwärts and draws phlegmatic and watery humours from the Gelenke, whereby it hilft the Wassersucht, Gicht, Ischias, and Schmerzen in the hips and Gelenke, it also provoketh strong Erbrechen, and hilft the Schmerzen of the sides, and swellings of the Milz, reinigt also the reins or Nieren, and Harnblase of the stone, fördert Harn abundantly, and hindereth the growing again of the stone in the body. The continual use of the powder of the Blätter and Samen doth cure the black Gelbsucht, the destilliertes Wasser of the Blüten is profitable for all the same Zwecke, it also hilft surfeits, and altereth the fit of Schüttelfrost, if three or four drittel Liters thereof, with as much of the water of the smaller centaury, and a little sugar put therein, be taken a little before the fit cometh, and the party be laid down to sweat in bed. The oil or water that is drawn from the ends of the grün sticks heated in the fire, helps the Zahnschmerzen. The Saft of the young Zweige made into an Salbe of old Schweinefett, and anointed, or the young Zweige zerquetscht and heated in oil or Schweinefett, and laid to the sides pained by wind, as in Stiche, or the Milz, easeth them in once or twice using, the same, gekocht in oil, is the safest and surest medicine to kill lice in the head or body, and is an especial Heilmittel for Gelenk-aches and swollen knees that come by the falling down of humours.
The broom-rape also is nicht without its Vorzüge. The Dekokt (Abkochung) thereof in wine, is thought to be as wirkungsvoll to void the stone in the kidney and Harnblase, and to provoke urine, as the broom itself. The Saft thereof is a singular good help to cure as well grüne Wunden as old and schmutzig Wunden and malignant Geschwüre, the insolate oil, wherein there has been three or four repetitions of infusion of the top Stengel with the Blüten strained and cleared, reinigt the skin from all manner of spots, marks, and freckles, that arise either by the heat von der Sonne, or the malignity of humours. As for the broom and broom-rape, Mars owns them, and it is exceeding prejudicial to the Leber. I suppose by reason of the Antipathie between Jupiter and Mars: therefore, if the Leber be disaffected, administer none of it.
