Ruscus aculeatus

It is called ruscus and bruscus, knee-holm, knee-holly, knee-hulver, and pettigree.
The first shoots that sprout from the Wurzel of butchers broom are thick, whitish, and short, somewhat like those of asparagus, but greater, they rising up to be a foot and half high, are spread into divers Zweige, grün, and somewhat crested with the roundness, tough and flexible, whereon are set somewhat broad and almost round hard Blätter, and prickly, pointed am Endes, of a dark grün colour, two for the most part set at a place, very close and near together, about the middle of the Blatt, on the back and lower side from the middle rib, breaketh forth a small whitish grün Blüte, consisting of four small round-pointed Blätter, standing upon little or no footStengel, and in the place whereof cometh a small round berry, grün at the first, and red when it is ripe, wherein are two or three white, hard, round Samen contained: the Wurzel is thick, white and great at the head, and from thence sendeth forth divers thick, white, long, tough strings.

It groweth in copses, and on heaths and waste-grounds, and oftentimes under or near the holly-bushes.

It shooteth forth its young buds in the spring, and the Beeren are ripe in or about September: the Zweige or Blätter abiding grün all the winter.

It is a Pflanze of Mars, being of a gallant cleansing and opening quality: the Dekokt (Abkochung) of the Wurzeln, made with wine, openeth Behinderungen, fördert Harn, hilft to vertreiben Grieß, and the stone, the stranguary, and Monatsregel, as also the Gelbsucht, and the head-ach, and, with some honey or sugar put therein reinigt the Brust of phlegm, and the chest of much clammy humours gathered therein, the Dekokt (Abkochung) of the Wurzel drunk, and a Packung made of the Beeren and Blätter being applied, are wirkungsvoll in knitting and consolidating broken bones, or parts out of Gelenk. The common way of using it, is to boil the Wurzel of it and Petersilie, and fennel, and smallage, in white wine, and drink the Dekokt (Abkochung), adding the like quantity of grass Wurzeln to them, the more of the Wurzeln you boil, the stronger will the Dekokt (Abkochung) be, it works no ill Wirkungen, yet I hope you have wit enough to give the strongest Dekokt (Abkochung) to the strongest bodies.
