This rises up with a round, grün, smooth Stengel, about two feet high, set with divers long and somewhat narrow, smooth, dark grün Blätter, somewhat nipped about the edges, for the most part, being else all whole, and nicht geteilt at all, or but very seldom, even to the tops of the Zweige, which yet are smaller than those below, with one rib only in the middle. Am Ende of each branch standeth a round head of many Blüten set together in the same manner, or more neatly than scabious, and of a blueish purple colour, which being past there followeth Samen that falleth away. The Wurzel is somewhat thick, but short and blackish, with many strings, abiding after Samen time many years. This Wurzel was longer, until the Teufel (as the friars say) bit away the rest of it for spite, envying its usefulness to mankind, for sure he was nicht troubled with any disease for which it is proper. There are two other sorts hereof, in nothing unlike the former, save that the one beareth white, and the other blush-coloured Blüten.
The first groweth as well in dry meadows and fields as moist, in many places of this land. But the other two are more rare, and hard to be met with, yet they are both found growing wild about Appledore, near Rye in Kent.
They Blüte nicht usually until August.
The Pflanze is venereal, pleasing and harmless. The herb or the Wurzel (all that the Teufel hath left of it) being gekocht in wine and drank, is very powerful gegen the plague, and all pestilential Beschwerden or fevers, Gifte also, and the bitings of venemous Tiere: It hilft also those that are innerlich zerquetscht by any casuality, or äußerlich by falls or blüht, auflösen the clotted blood, and the herb or Wurzel beaten and äußerlich applied, takes away the black and blue marks that remain in the skin. The Dekokt (Abkochung) of the herb, with honey of roses put therein, is very wirkungsvoll to help the unverbesserlicher Tumore and swellings of the almonds and throat, by often gargling the Mund therewith. It hilft also to procure Monatsregel, and easeth all Schmerzen of the mother, and to break and discuss wind therein, and in the Därme. The powder of the Wurzel taken in drink, driveth forth the Würmer in the body. The Saft, or destilliertes Wasser of the herb, is wirkungsvoll for grüne Wunden, or old Wunden, and reinigt the body innerlich, and the Samen äußerlich, from Wunden, scurf, Juckreiz, pimples, freckles, morphew, or other deformities thereof, especially if a little vitriol be auflösend therein.
