Lithospermum officinale
Mars in Jungfrau

Of this I shall briefly describe their kinds, which are principally used in physic, the Vorzüge whereof are alike, though somewhat different in their manner and form of growing.
The greater gromel wächst up with schlank hard and hairy Stengel, trailing and taking Wurzel in the ground, as it lies thereon, and parted into many other small Zweige with hairy dark grün Blätter thereon. At the Gelenke, with the Blätter, come forth very small blue Blüten, and after them hard stony roundish Samen. The Wurzel is long and hölzern, abiding the Winter, and shoots forth fresh Stengel in the spring.
The smaller wild Gromel sends forth divers aufrecht hard branched Stengel, two or three feet high full of Gelenke, at every one of which grow small, long, hard, and rough Blätter like the former, but less, among which Blätter come forth small white Blüten, and after them greyish round Samen like the former, the Wurzel is nicht very big, but with many strings thereat.
The garden Gromel has divers aufrecht, schlank, hölzern, hairy Stengel, blown and cressed very little branched, with Blätter like the former, and white Blüten, after which, in rough brown Hülsen, is contained a white, hard, round Samen, shining like pearls, and greater than either the former, the Wurzel is like the first described, with divers Zweige and sprigs thereat, which continues (as the first doth) all the Winter.

The two first grow wild in barren or untilled places, and by the way side in many places of this land. The last is a nursling in the gardens of the curious.

They all Blüte from Midsummer until September manchmal, and in the mean time the Samen ripens.

The herb gehört zu Dame Venus, and therefore if Mars cause the cholic or stone, as usually he doth, if in Virgo, this is your cure. These are accounted to be of as singular force as any herb or Samen whatsoever, to break the stone and to void it, and the Grieß either in the reins or Harnblase, as also to provoke urine being stopped, and to help stranguary. The Samen is of greatest use, being zerquetscht and gekocht in white wine or in broth, or the like, or the powder of the Samen taken therein. Two drams of the Samen in powder taken with womens Brust milk, is very wirkungsvoll to procure a very speedy Geburt to such women as have sore Schmerzen in their travail, and cannot be deLebered. The herb itself, (when the Samen is nicht to be had) either gekocht, or the Saft thereof drank, is wirkungsvoll to all the Zwecke vorbenannt, but nicht so powerful or speedy in operation.
