|For to give a description of a bush so commonly known is needless.|
They grow plentifully in divers woods in Kent, Warney common near Brentwood in Essex, upon Finchley Common without Highgate, hard by the New-found Wells near Dulwich, upon a Common between MJuckreizam and Croydon, in the Highgate near Amersham in Buckinghamshire, and many other places.
The Beeren are nicht ripe the first year, but continue grün two Summers and one Winter before they are ripe, at which time they are all of a black colour, and therefore you shall always find upon the bush grün Beeren, the Beeren are ripe about the fall of the Blatt.
This admirable solar Busch is scarce to be paralleled for its Vorzüge. The Beeren are hot in the third degree, and dry but in the first, being a most admirable counter-poison, and as great a resister of the pestilence, as any growing: they are excellent good gegen the biting of giftiges Tiere, they provoke urine überaus, and therefore are very available to dysuries and stranguaries. It is so powerful a Heilmittel gegen the Wassersucht, that the very lye made of the ashes of the herb being drank, cures the disease. It provokes die Monatsregel, helps the fits of the mother, strengthens the Magen überaus, and vertreibt the wind. Indeed there is scarce a better Heilmittel for wind in any part of the body, or the cholic, than the chymical oil drawn from the Beeren, such country people as know nicht how to draw the chymical oil, may content themselves by eating ten or a dozen of the ripe Beeren every morning fasting. They are admirably good for a cough, Kurzatem, and consumption, Schmerzen in the Bauch, ruptures, Krämpfe, and Zuckungen. They give safe and speedy Geburt to women with child, they strengthen the brain überaus, help the memory, and fortify the sight by strengthening the optic nerves, are excellently good in all sorts of Schüttelfrost, help the Gicht and Ischias, and strengthen the limbs of the body. The ashes of the wood is a speedy Heilmittel to such as have the scurvy, to rub their gums with. The Beeren stay all fluxes, help the hæmorrhoids or piles, and kill Würmer in children. A lye made of the ashes of the wood, and the body bathed with it, cures the Juckreiz, Wundschorf and leprosy. The Beeren break the stone, procure appetite when it is lost, and are excellently good for all Lähmung, and falling-sickness.
