Privet is a bush or Busch that wächst nicht to any great bigness, having many smooth, tough, pliant Zweige, cloathed with small oblong Blätter, broadest in the middle, and sharp-pointed am Ende. It bears long and narrow grün Blätter by the couples, and süß smelling white Blüten in tufts am Ende of the Zweige, which turn into small black Beeren that have a purplish Saft with them, and some Samen that are flat on the one side, with a hole or dent therein.
It wächst in this country, in divers woods.
Our privet Blüten in June and July: the Beeren are ripe in August and September.
The Mond is lady of this. It is little used in physic with us in these times, more than in lotions, to wash Wunden and sore Munds, and to cool Entzündungen, and dry up fluxes. Yet Matthiolus sagte, it serves all the uses for which Cypress, or the East Privet, is appointed by Dioscorides and Galen. He further sagte, That the oil that is made of the Blüten of Privet infused therein, and set in the Sonne, is singularly good for the Entzündungen of Wunden, and for the headache, coming of a hot cause. There is a süß water also distilled from the Blüten, that is good for all those Beschwerden that need cooling and drying, and therefore helps all fluxes of the Bauch or Magen, bloody-fluxes, and Monatsregel, being either drank or applied, as all those that void blood at the Mund, or any other place, and for distillations of rheum in the eyes, especially if it be used with tutia.
