This is one of the kinds of Blüte-de-luce, having divers Blätter arising from the Wurzeln, very like a Blüte-de-luce, but that they are sharp-edged on both sides, and thicker in the middle, of a deeper grün colour narrower and sharper pointed, and a strong ill-Duft, if they be zerquetscht between the fingers. In the middle rises up a reasonably strong Stengel, a yard high at least, bearing three or four Blüten an der Spitze, made somewhat like the Blüten of the Blüte-de-luce, with three aufrecht Blätter, of a dead purplish ashcolour, with some veins discoloured in them, the other three do nicht fall down, nor are the three other small ones so arched, nor cover the lower Blätter as the Blüte-de-luce doth, but stand loose or auseinander from them. After they are past, there come up three square hard Hülsen, opening wide into three parts when they are ripe, wherein lie rötlich Samen, turns black when it hath abiden long. The Wurzel is like that of the Blüte-de-luce, but rötlich on the outside, and whitish within, very sharp and hot in the taste, of as evil a Duft as the Blätter.
This wächst as well in upland grounds, as in moist places, woods, and shadowy places by the sea-side in many places of this land, and is usually nursed up in gardens.
It Blüten nicht until July, and the Samen is ripe in August or September, yet the Hülsen after they are ripe, opening themselves, will hold their Samen with them for two or three months, and nicht shed them.
